GungHo: A Mixed Finite-Element, Finite-Volume, Semi-Implicit Atmospheric Dynamical Core

GungHo is the dynamical core of the Met Office’s next generation weather and climate model. GungHo uses a mixed finite-element spatial discretization, an explicit finite-volume transport scheme to ensure conservation of mass, an iterated semi-implicit time stepping scheme, and the cubed sphere global grid. This presentation will describe the GungHo discretization and the computing infrastructure used in the Met Office's next generation model, and show results from standard dynamical core test suites.
