We consider real scenarios where wind conditions (directions and amplitudes) are chosen from real measurement data at a meteorological station in Paris and pollutant levels on each road are based on realistic values of Airparif data. To get a better understanding of spatial and temporal flow and air quality distribution in a real district, CFD is used with RANS turbulence modelling. Thanks to the air pollutant distribution, critical polluted areas can be identified which are used as “quantity of interest” in the adjoint advection-diffusion equation. Accordingly, we introduce and apply a sensitivity criterion for the smart placement of depolluting panels in order to reduce air pollutants in the areas of interest at the pedestrian level in Paris.
