Ray-tracing laser heat source model with adaptive ray resolution for laser-based manufacturing process simulations

In this work, a ray-tracing laser heat source model with adaptive ray resolution for the multiphase simulation of laser-based manufacturing processes is introduced. This model adaptively refines the mesh of ray generation and maintains a sufficient ray resolution for the energy input at ray numbers lower than uniform mesh. Its performance is benchmarked by laser drilling and laser powder bed fusion simulations with the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method.
